Fly Safely with Food Restrictions!

For those of you who don't have access to my Instagram - sharing here three useful, foundational tips for your travelling collection:

🍏👉Contact airlines in advance to find out what exactly they can offer for passengers with allergies/restrictions. However, (!) keep in mind that there are no standardized rules and some airlines offer no accommodations at all (I would even say a few may be quite negative about accommodating), while others may go above and beyond (e.g. allow you to pre-board, discuss details of your dietary restrictions, warn their staff in advance, etc.). So always-always-always be well prepared and reach out way ahead of time! P.S. Some companies may promise accommodations but then refuse them at the boarding gate, so always have a plan B!

🍏👉Prepare a concise list/speech of the most important requirements to mention to your fly attendants as you board the plane and skip as many details as possible. Often times staff are simply too distracted at the time of boarding and if you also happen to be in the same line as everyone else, you will have just a few seconds of their attention. So, tell them what you need, but be very short and very clear. I use this formula: name of my allergy – I can’t eat it and/or inhale – this is what I will do during the flight to stay safe – this is what I need the flight crew to do. The rest is out of your control, and they will either help you or not; but if you mention too many things for too long, they are likely to feel overwhelmed and tune out.

🍏👉If you are at risk of airborne reaction, ask a fly attendant to make an announcement so that the passengers would refrain from eating foods containing your allergen during the flight. This means a great deal for us, but be prepared to hear some unpleasant comments about it (from passengers and staff alike). Some flight attendants will refuse to do the announcement, others will do it and may even repeat it twice! P.S. I also always have a face mask with me in the airplane in case they refuse to announce it. And remember, unfortunately at this moment passengers with food restrictions cannot expect or demand an allergen-free environment, so be prepared, feel confident, stay positive, and plan ahead! You can do it!😀💚
